Â
History of the Bada Imambara
Â
Lucknow’s Bada Imambara has an interesting back story to it. It is believed that the construction of the monument was a part of the Nawab’s plan to keep the common people fed during the famine of the 1780s. The workers were paid in meals for the construction of the Imambara. On the other hand, the noblemen, who also had to bear the brunt of the famine had the responsibility of destroying the progress made by the workers in the morning, in the darkness of the night. This way, the royal head made sure that the period of construction gets stretched out and that people would be able to survive the famine. The famous architect of the time, Hafiz Kiyafat Ullah designed the structure. Interestingly, it is an amalgamation of Mughal, Rajput and Gothic architectural patterns.
The most fascinating part of the grand structure is the maze situated inside the compound which is famously called the Bhool Bhulaiya. It is advised to be accompanied by a certified guide while visiting the maze. Once in, you will surely start believing in the myths and stories of people getting lost forever inside the maze.
