Jal Mahal, the iconic building in Jaipur
 - Hotels In Gangtok
Jal Mahal (Water Palace)Â in Jaipur is a spectacular structure that appears to float on the surface of the picturesque Man Sagar Lake. It is an architectural marvel in and of itself, embodying the Rajput period's engineering prowess. The palace, which was built as a hunting lodge for the Maharajas of Jaipur, is now one of the city's most popular tourist attractions. When planning your trip, don't forget to book your Jaipur hotels so that you have easy access to this magnificent palace as well as the city's other forts and historical attractions.
Â
A brief history of the Jal Mahal
Â
The palace, which was built in 1699, underwent extensive renovations and expansions in the 18th century. The Jal Mahal underwater palace was built to serve as a hunting lodge for the Raja and his entourage, who visited the area frequently. When it was built, it was never intended to be a palace. When it was dry, the region was nothing more than a flat depression, and the water level rarely rose except during heavy downpours.
Â
The Jal Mahal's Architecture
Â
Architecturally, the Jal Mahal palace is a large-scale example of the Mughal-Rajput architectural style, which was popular in Rajasthan at the time. It is a five-story palace. When the lake is full, four levels are submerged, and only the fifth floor is visible. The original garden that stood on the terrace had been destroyed. A completely new deck is being constructed in the style of a roof garden similar to the one found in the Amer Palace.
Â
Here are some lesser-known facts about Jaipur's Jal Mahal.
- Chameli Bagh is the fascinating terrace garden of the Jal Mahal.
- There are no personal chambers inside the palace because it was built as a picnic spot rather than a residential structure.
- The palace is thought to have been built during a famine when the lake bed had completely dried up. As a result, the entire structure was visible when it was built.
- The walls of this stone palace were so thickly built that no water could get in. The walls were reinforced with limestone mortar.
